Profile on Humana’s Focus on the Consumer

Inside the pink granite walls of Humana's 27-story headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky, the medical insurer has assembled an array of experts--in consumer packaging, retail, and finance--to help figure out how to make health care work better and cost less. Humana is the nation's fourth-largest health benefits company and it gets two-thirds of its revenue from the government. This means the company can be particularly vulnerable to tightening Medicare reimbursements. In addition, Humana's private health insurance focuses on smaller employers, many of whom are cutting back their health insurance benefits because of costs.
